STEREO

Optreden, liedjes schrijven en daar steeds weer beter in worden. Praat met de leden van STEREO en dat zijn de steekwoorden die regelmatig vallen. Het is tekenend voor de ambitie van deze nieuwe Nederlandse groep. Op 19 juni verschijnt het debuut Monogamy. Het album bevat compacte rock. Modern, eerlijk en to the point. Ook in de teksten wordt niet om de hete brij heen gedraaid. Wat je ziet is wat je krijgt.

STEREO kwam voort uit het programma Rock Nation van RTL 5. Een speurtocht naar jong Nederlands rocktalent leverde dit zestal op. Het stel woonde een tijdlang in een huis in Den Haag, waar gewerkt werd aan muziek en de band langzaam vaste vormen begon aan te nemen. ‘Als we elkaar in de kroeg tegen waren gekomen, hadden we waarschijnlijk ook een band gevormd’, vindt Daan Koch. ‘We vullen elkaar perfect aan, omdat we heel verschillende muzikale achtergronden hebben en toch dezelfde muzikale ambities delen.’

Daar is niets te weinig mee gezegd. Voor STEREO in hun leven kwam, waren de individuele muzikanten als actief in gitaarbands, hardcore groepen of hip hop collectieven. Ervaring werd ook opgedaan in studio’s, op rockacademies en conservatoria. Diverse leden zijn ook nog eens multi-instrumentalist. Nee, onbeschreven bladen zijn het allerminst. ‘Het was best even zoeken naar een gemeenschappelijke muzikale grond’, erkent Thijs Schrijnemakers. ‘Wat echter scheelde was dat we ons voorheen nooit blindgestaard hebben op een bepaald genre. Allemaal houden we van rock, pop en hip hop. Het draait uiteindelijk om een goed liedje.’

Het werd dus rock. Een keuze die niet voorbijgaat aan de veelzijdigheid aan achtergronden van de band. Overigens een kwaliteit die een van de redenen was om definitief te kiezen voor de bandnaam STEREO. Astrid Kunst noemt als voorbeeld de teksten, die grotendeels van haar hand zijn. ‘Nederlandse bands hebben soms de neiging om in hun Engelstalige teksten nogal uit te weiden; poëtisch te doen waar dat niet perse nodig is. Wij proberen veel concreter te zijn. Met de deur in huis te vallen. Het is, nu ik er over nadenk, iets dat je veel in de hip hop hoort. Pats! Dit is het.’

Al wijst de band Daan Koch aan als de creatieve kracht in de band, het debuut is het resultaat van inspanningen van de hele band. Iedereen bedacht thuis thema’s en melodieën, nam die mee naar de oefenruimte, waar ze collectief uitgewerkt werden tot volwaardige songs. ‘dat was geweldig om te doen’, vertelt Noah Smits. ‘Op zulke momenten merk je dat STEREO een volwaardige band is. Alleen in zo’n omgeving kun je ideeën uitwisselen en verder ontwikkelen. De plaat is echt van iedereen.’

STEREO werkte in de studio nauw samen met de gelouterde producer Gordon Groothedde, die de afgelopen jaren veel succes had met heel verschillende acts als Intwine, Vengeance, After Forever, The Sheer en a balladeer. ‘Hij had meteen perfect in de gaten wat de essentie van de groep was’, legt Stephan Beuving uit. ‘Hij heeft alles uit ons gehaald. In de periode dat we aan de plaat werkten, beschouwden we hem als ons zevende bandlid.’

Binnenkort ligt het resultaat van al die inspanningen in de winkel met als titel Monogamy. Volgens de band moeten we daar geen al te diepe gedachte achter zoeken. Hoewel? Het woord roept associaties op met dingen die heel belangrijk voor de band zijn, vertelt Jean-Baptiste Zablone. Trouw, verbintenis, toewijding en eerlijkheid. ‘We kunnen alles tegen elkaar zeggen. Alles is bespreekbaar. Waar het ook voor staat is: wij samen tegen de rest van de wereld’.

Wat dat laatste betreft duidt STEREO op het vooroordeel dat mogelijk bestaat ten opzichte van een band die voortgekomen is uit een televisieprogramma. Daan Koch: ‘Ik kan mij heel goed voorstellen dat er mensen zijn die naar onze concerten komen met het idee: ‘jullie hebben gewonnen? Laat maar eens zien of jullie dat ook waard zijn’. Laat ze maar komen. We overtuigen ze graag. Het is echt niet zo dat we, omdat wij als winnaars uit de bus zijn gekomen, het gevoel hebben dat we er nu al zijn. Integendeel. We gaan optreden. Kilometers maken. Groeien. Nog meer nummers schrijven. Rock Nation was een prettige steun in de rug. Een cadeautje, dat we kregen nadat de meeste van ons jarenlang met eigen bandjes geploeterd hadden. Nu komt het op ons aan. Eigenlijk begint alles nu pas.’

Performing, writing songs and getting better at it all the time. Those are phrases that keep popping up when talking to the members of STEREO. It is characteristic for the ambitions of this new Dutch group. On June 19, their debut album Monogamy will be released. It is jam-packed with compact rock. Modern, gutsy and to the point. The lyrics say it all, loud and clear. What you see is what you get.

STEREO emerged from the programme Rock Nation on RTL 5 television. A search for young Dutch rock talent yielded these six naturals. For some time, the group lived in a house in The Hague and just worked on their music. Slowly, something great grew out of this. ‘If we had met each other in a bar, we probably would have started a band anyway,’ says Daan Koch. ‘We complement each other perfectly because although we come from very different musical backgrounds we do share the same musical ambitions.’

That pretty much sums it up. Before STEREO came into their lives, the individual musicians were already active in guitar bands, hardcore groups or hip hop collectives. They also gained experience in studios, at rock academies and music schools. Some of the members are multi instrumentalists as well. They have all paid their dues. ‘It did take a while to find a common musical ground,’ acknowledges Thijs Schrijnemakers. ‘But the big difference was that we had never been fixed on a particular style. We all love rock, pop and hip hop. In the end it all comes down to a good song.’

So rock was chosen. A choice which does not ignore the many different backgrounds of the band members. And that aspect was one of the reasons to decide on STEREO as the name for the band. Astrid Kunst cites the example of the lyrics, which are written mainly by her. ‘Dutch bands do have a tendency to dwell on certain aspects in their English lyrics and to take a poetical stance when that is not necessary. We try to be much more concrete and to come straight to the point. This, in my opinion, is something you find a lot in hip hop. Wham! This is it.’

Although the members point to Daan Koch as the creative force in the band, their debut is very much the result of a collective effort. Everyone came up with themes and melodies, which were taken up collectively and worked out to finished, fascinating songs. ‘That was a great way to work,’ Noah Smits says. ‘At moments like that you discover that STEREO is a fully fledged band. It was an ideal environment for exchanging ideas and developing them further. The record is truly a joint effort.’

In the studio STEREO worked under supervision of top notch producer Gordon Groothedde, who in recent years has had a lot of success with various acts such as Intwine, Vengeance, After Forever, The Sheer, and a balladeer. ‘He instinctively caught on to the essence of the group,’ Stephan Beuving explains. ‘He made us dig deep. During the recording sessions we treated him as our seventh band member.’

Soon, the result of all their hard work will be in the shops under the title of Monogamy. According to the band, not too much should be inferred from the title. Although? The word calls up all sorts of associations with things that are very important to the band,’ Jean-Baptiste Zablone explains. Loyalty, commitment, devotion and honesty. ‘We can be completely frank with one another. No subject of discussion is out of bounds. But it also reflects the fact that we stand together against the rest of the world.’

Concerning this last point, STEREO points to a possible prejudice against a band that sprung from a television programme. Daan Koch: “I can very well imagine people coming to our concerts thinking: ”So you guys won? Okay, show us what you’re worth.” I say, let them come. We will do our best to convince them. The fact that we ended up as winners in the show does not mean that we feel we have fully arrived. On the contrary. We are going out on tour. Cover miles and miles. Grow. Write a lot of new songs. Of course, Rock Nation was a very welcome leg up. A present we received after most of us had been working hard for years with bands of our own. Now it is up to us. This is only the beginning.’
